Finally there is the Fukushima Dai-ichi disaster in Japan that occurred as a result of an earthquake in March of 2011 and the ensuing tsunami. Here three of the reactors are known to have gone into full meltdown and there were numerous explosions within the facility that have led to the release of gamma radiation into the air and into the oceans as sea water was pumped into the reactors to try and cool them down. The net result is an unacceptably high level of gamma radiation in the surrounding area that may render it uninhabitable for years to come.

So what does this mean for the average person or even more importantly for anyone who works in the emergency services fields, which includes police, fire, rescue and emergency medical personnel? In essence it means that you are at risk of being exposed to unacceptably high levels of gamma radiation at any time if you live or work in the vicinity of a nuclear power facility or are called help out near one in the event of a natural disaster.

Part of the problem lies in the fact that the majority of these facilities were built decades ago, long before current technology would have changed the way they were designed and built. Many here in the US are far past their original expected lifespan and have been "recertified" several times and updated in attempts to make them safer, more accurately to monitor radiation levels, meet new standards and keep them online far longer than they were originally designed to last.

It also means that your risk of radiation exposure is far higher now than it has ever been at any time in the past.
