Uses For Digital Panel Meters - Technology - Electronics

Analog meters were formerly a common way to measure. They have been replaced by more modern digital units. Analog meters were limited to measuring only one scale, either milligrams or kilograms. Digital panel meters can measure both scales at the same time, and can easily be switched to other measurement readings.

High end digital panel meters have screen space for 6-digit displays. They provide more accurate data to their users, but are simpler to program than most former single line displays. The meter receives an input electrical signal which measures and displays information on a digital screen. It can be used to indicate temperature, speed, pressure, current and other variables.

Newer cars often have a digital panel meter on the dashboard that provides the same type of measurements. Speed, revolutions per minute (RPMs) and fuel amounts are indicated on the instrument panel, giving the driver real-time vital statistics regarding the car's performance.

Flight consoles in an airplane provide a wide variety of information, including altitude, speed and other readings necessary for maintaining a smooth flight. These are the vital panel meters that also let pilots know the accurate altitude, keeping the plane from mountain collisions at night and in low or minimal visibility situations.

In business or home spaces, these meters can measure the temperature and air speed of fans or air conditioning units. Digital panel meters are found throughout the house in input panels of ovens, in regular ovens as clocks and timers, or on television screens to regulate DVR units. Radios and TVs also contain meters that register frequency and amplitude and reproduce the audio and video signals. Water pumps have a pressure gauge that measures the running amount and coordinates with motor speed to maintain correct water flow into a swimming pool or tank.

Some digital panels are hand-held and designed to display direct current (DC) voltage for hobbyists or industrial situations where accuracy is paramount. The units inform the user of possible over-voltage conditions. Two or three readings are taken every second ensuring the integrity of the display provided. This type of portable meter operates off a 9-volt battery.

Electricians wiring homes and businesses use a multi-meter, which carry input for a variety of functions. This type of panel meter measures multiple variables within the structure, including electrical current, voltage, power, resistance and impedance. A portable meter is a small hand-held device. Most people are familiar with such a meter when it is used in metal detectors or for measuring levels of radiation: a Geiger counter. A digital panel meter has a wide variety of uses.
